Hackintoshers bring back Atom support

November 20, 2009

Let the games begin! When Apple left support for Intel Atom processors out of Mac OS X 10.6.2, we all knew it would be a matter days before savvy netbook users would re-instate the functionality and now that’s exactly what’s happened—rock on.

Apple’s Mac tablet is already a game changer

November 16, 2009

No one satisfies with vaporware like Apple. This device hasn’t been seen let alone used by anyone, but pundits of every stripe are tripping over each other to declare the Mac tablet, a.k.a. iPod touch on steroids, the next insanely great thing from Steve Jobs and his merry band of elves.

Summary judgements bite PsyStar hard

November 14, 2009

Both the hackintosh maker and Apple had requested summary judgements from the bench, a risky move that could have delivered a stinging rebuke and lopsided defeat to either side. Nevertheless, it was the Cupertino, California-based Mac, iPod and iPhone that prevailed with the judge coming down against the illegal cloner on nearly every charge — a likely death blow.

Microsoft: ‘How we really designed Windows 7′

November 12, 2009

Parents arguing in public — it’s just embarrassing and it’s impossible not to feel sympathy for their kids. In this case, it’s the word of a corporate sales guy who made an off-the-cuff remark about Windows 7’s origins and the operating system’s designers now saying those remarks were “inaccurate and uniformed.”

Microsoft: ‘We’ve tried to create a Mac look and feel’

November 11, 2009

You’ve really gotta give Apple and its marketing people credit for always being on message and keeping tight control of what’s said — you just don’t hear faux pas like this from them. Granted, they get caught lying from time to time, but never plumping other companies’ products, especially not Microsoft’s.

Thereupon, it’s better to be prepared for the inevitable, so read this tutorial, print it out and put it where you can find it when the time comes.

Don’t have a cow, man! OS X 10.6.2 supports Atom [again]

November 4, 2009

With incidents like this, you’ve gotta wonder if Apple’s just testing to see if we’re 1.) paying attention and 2.) actually care. In this particular case, we don’t know what if any purpose Cupertino had in removing and returning support for the processors used in most netbooks, but folks were definitely paying attention.

StatCounter says Windows 7 is off to ‘encouraging’ start [guffaw]

November 3, 2009

Geez Louise this has gotta sting and more than a little. To date, two of the more prominent Web metrics firms have pegged Microsoft’s operating system launch somewhere between good for Apple and the Mac, to better than Vista. So much for a holiday home run for Redmond this Christmas shopping season.

Would you pay $30 a month for ‘iTunes TV’?

November 2, 2009

Is Apple preparing to push its industry-leading jukebox/device management/digital download store software in a new direction? The latest rumor making the rounds is that Steve Jobs, Eddy Cue and their merry band are preparing the way for a monthly subscription service, but you’re run of the mill pay-forever-music deal that everyone else is offering.
